CHAPTER 9
âThat was some cake,â Mirabelle said. âI should commission him to bake some for the cafe.â
âLetâs figure out who the murderer is before we do that,â I said.
âWhat, you think itâs him?â
âI donât know,â I said honestly. âI mean, he had the right answers for everything. The murderer is always someone you donât expect, right?â
âExcept, you are suspecting him, so does that mean heâs not guilty?â
âI still donât have the pieces yet,â I said. âThis money issue might give us a clue. What was Lena doing with it?â
âSuzy works at the bank. Why donât we ask her?â
Suzy was one of Mirabelleâs best friends. She came to one of our girlsâ sleepovers last month and we all had a great time catching up. She was married to her boss at the bank and would probably be able to help us.
âSo letâs go then,â I said.
âItâs lunchtime and Iâm not hungry,â Mirabelle said. âWe shouldnât have had so much cake.â
Mirabelle called Suzy and asked her if she was at work. Suzy had just been out grabbing a salad but met us back early at the bank. It was perfect timing because she was booked with appointments and meetings all afternoon.
We parked on the street and went inside. Suzy came out to meet us. She was a perky blonde in a baby blue dress suit. When we were growing up, sheâd been a frequent visitor to the Wild house, so she knew both of us well.
âHow are you girls?â Suzy asked. âMirabelle, youâre even bigger than the last time I saw you.â
âWatch it,â Mirabelle joked.
âIâm throwing a baby shower for Mirabelle,â I said. âHereâs the invite.â
I gave her the envelope. She opened it and laughed when the baby popped out of the egg-shaped card. âCute! Of course Iâll be there. Come into my office.â
Her office was very bare. No window and just a desk and a computer like all the other offices on the hall. The doors were transparent glass so we could see through them. We sat down and Mirabelle explained why we were here.
âLena Mumson? The woman who got stabbed?â
We nodded gravely.
âWe just want to know a tiny piece of information from her banking transactions,â I said.
âOh gosh. Okay. And youâre investigating her murder, naturally?â Suzy gave us a wry smile.
Mirabelle pointed to me. âShe is. I want very little to do with murder investigations, actually.â
âCome on,â I said. âYou think this is as fun as I do.â
âI could be kicking back with a glass of apple juice and reading baby books right now,â Mirabelle joked. âBut anyway, any idea what Lena would do with that money?â
Suzy did a search. âThis information is confidentialâ¦but since it is to help find a murderer on the loose, why not?â
She grinned and began typing furiously on her computer. After scrolling through Lenaâs banking transactions, she found what we were looking for.
âShe did deposit a cheque for $6840 from Sunstream Travel around this time last year, and then she made out a cheque a couple of days later for the same amount.
